The Algarvian hills lie subtly in the background to some of Europes best kept beaches. Herein lie centuries of history and culture much of which has barely been touched by modern day development.

Having a vehicle is required to experience the essence of the Algavian hills the cost of which is well worth the expense.
The Eastern Algarve, ("Sotovento Algarvio"), begins at its eastern extreme bordering the beautiful Guadiana river that snakes its way up through much of Portugal and providing the Algarve's natural frontier with Spain.
Inland roads in general are in good condition whilst uncountless dirt tracks run even deeper into the wild ideal for 4x4 trips.
The Algarvian hills are also home to numerous villages located in the most remote of places. Sleepy by nature, these villages may offer little in the way of tourist attractions but much in the cultural ways of life here as it has been for more than a few decades.
From the simplistic traditions of baking bread to more intricate craft skills including wicker works and tapestry the way of life here is of pure simplistic tranquility.
The hills are networked with a series of interesting routes for walking with well marked trails. During the hotter summer months it is advisable to prepare well with water, head gear suncream and even making an early start.
The distant arid aspect of the Algarvian hills soon converts to one of surprise at the amount of vegetation actually found here. Whilst there are few areas of extensive woodland, the shrublife and flowers during the spring months create a wonderful environment for a host of butterflies, lizards, small snakes, birdlife and other insects.

The agricultural activities of the hills is subtly inter-mixed with the natural surrounding landscapes. Cork trees forests are abundant in areas up from Tavira and Faro.
