Rebuilt after a destructive earthquake, Vila Real de Santo Antonio is a refreshing and extremely atrractive harbour town overlooking the Spanish town of Ayamonte and the Guadiana river dividing them.
Full of classical Portuguese architecture, typical Portuguese stone streets, relaxed and welcoming locals and a host of amenities to cater for all requirements of any visit.
The focal point of the town is an impressive central square bordered by restaurants and cafés whilst being chaparoned by street entertainers and local events and exhibitions.
The marina is always full of boats and yachts and an extensive promenade continues past the town towards the headland some 2 kms further south where the river meets the Atlantic and the beaches of Vila Real and Monte Gordo.
Vila Real was typically famous for its linen and towel production and is often busy with Spaniards taking the easy trip across the border to make their purchases.
Before the construction of the border bridge, a ferry was taken from the Marina here to Ayamonte. This ferry is still in operation to both pedestrians and vehicles running at regular 20 minute intervals throughout the day.
The local bus station is found directlky next to the old customs point where the ferry departs and just 100 metres from the centre of town.
